Chapter Fourteen

Esme opened the front door looking angry, although her expression altered into cautious relief when she saw who was standing on the wide step under the portico. ‘Am I pleased to see you! Maybe you can find out what the hell is going on, because no one is talking to us.’

Behind Esme, in the hall, Jo could see a substantial grey-trousered rump sticking out of a cupboard and as she and Macy followed Esme in, they had to step over the vacuum cleaner, a toolbox, and a stack of board games with Monopoly uppermost, which Jo realised were the contents of the cupboard. The policeman in there continued his search without moving his bottom as they picked their way past him and into the kitchen.

‘I’ve told them if they find a red plaid umbrella to let me know,’ Esme said wryly. ‘I’ve been looking for it for weeks.’

Anna Pinder got up from the kitchen table when she saw them. Her eyeliner was blotched, which emphasised her almond-shaped eyes, and her hair looked uncombed. She managed to indicate they were welcome by nodding and then stood staring at them.

‘Could you tell us what these guys expect to find?’ Esme began. ‘Because they are not programmed for conversation.’

Macy perched himself on a stool and looked around expectantly, as if waiting for some entertainment to begin. Anna began preparing the inevitable coffee and, from behind her, came the slam of a door and men’s voices in the hall.

‘Looks like they’ve finished with the dining room,’ Esme commented.

‘I wonder if they’ve left much mess.’ Anna went out to check. Her body was rigid with anxiety so that, walking rapidly, she looked like a wind-up toy set down to march quickly in any direction. Jo had the impression that the clockwork would run down soon.

‘They’re looking for the gun,’ Jo said, in answer to Esme’s original question. She felt a disapproving glance from Macy who, no doubt, would not have said as much.

Esme had picked up where her mother had left off in making the coffee and looked up, her eyes wide open. ‘The gun?’ she repeated.

‘I take it they haven’t found it, then?’ Macy chipped in. He looked around as if he thought it might be wedged between the storage jars on the dresser.

Esme stared at him. Her face toughened up and Jo felt unreasonably pleased. A vulnerable Esme was too much out of character.

‘Our family doesn’t agree with guns,’ Esme said. ‘My father would never have owned a gun, much less used it.’

‘I think the implication is that someone else used it on him,’ Macy responded.

Esme brought their coffee over wordlessly. Jo took a sip and wondered how she could heal the breach between these two people, both of whom she was growing to like. Difficult when Macy was being so deliberately arsey.

She tried to reopen the conversation. ‘Where’s Carly?’

‘At school.’ Esme stood uneasily by the hall doorway, glancing round occasionally to see how the search was going. It seemed that the Monopoly and vacuum cleaner were going back in now.
